KATHMANDU, JAN 31 -
The seven-month-long efforts of the three big political parties for the formation of national consensus government for the peace and constitution has failed to make headway after today's meeting of these parties ended inconclusively.
A meeting of the top leaders of the UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML held at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction this afternoon saw all parties sticking to their stands thereby making no progress.
The meeting held to sort out the issues on constitution writing, peace process, government leadership and power sharing did not last more than 30 minutes as the parties failed to agree on who should lead the national government.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal also attended the three-party meeting today.
Talking briefly to the media persons following the meeting, parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress, Ram Chandra Poudel said the rote of the party for the need of national consensus government to fulfill the responsibilities of peace and constitution-writing has been proved pretend today.
The meeting ended without entering agenda after the parties stuck to their stand- 'Only I should lead the government.'
Similarly, Chairman of CPN (UML), Jhala Nath Khanal informed the media persons that light discussions were held in today's short meeting. He also expressed commitment to seek consensus to the final extent.
Vice Chairman of UCPN (Maoist), Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the meeting yielded no outcome as the parties did not budge from their claim to the government leadership. "No new agenda was presented at the meeting and no agreement was made there", he added.
Though the last meeting taken place at Gokarna ended with a lot of hopes, today's meeting yielded no positive result, he added.
NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC urged the media persons to not to take today's meeting as a final meeting for national consensus and feel that efforts for consensus ended with the meeting.
However, he said except making an agreement to take further initiatives at forging consensus, the meeting yielded no outcome.
Home Minister Bhim Rawal said the meeting neither faced any new agenda nor made new decisions promising to hold two-party meeting for consensus.
The nation is run by the caretaker government since Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned from the post on June 30 last year. The nation could not get a new government despite marathon two-party and three-party discussions among the parties in the name of national consensus.
After the meeting, different leaders gave reaction that the possibility of formation of national consensus government has almost ended.
The voting for a new prime minister has been fixed for February 3, 5 and 7 at the Legislature-Parliament. RSS
