Private schools call for regulatory mechanism
KATHMANDU, JAN 28 -
The stakeholders have expressed the need of an effective policy and strong mechanism to regulate the private education institutions.
Speaking at an interaction in the Capital on Thursday, they said private education sector requires a strong monitoring mechanism and effective procedures while issuing license. “Private education sector has emerged as a business enterprise rather than a service provider,” said Guna Raj Lohani, chairperson of All Nepal Teachers’ Union. “We are against commercialisation in education.” He also said that his organisation would disrupt the process of establishing new private schools from the new session.
Stating that the lack of strong government policy and monitoring mechanism has led to arbitrary increase in tuition fees, Nepal Guardians’ Association Chairman Suprabhat Bhandari laid emphasis on the need of effective operation of Central Fee Determining Committee. “The committee’s failure to take timely decision creates confrontation among the stakeholders every year.” Jagrit Rayamajhi, vice-chairman of All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary), said that his union will stage protests if the private schools arbitrarily increase fees this year. He also informed that the union will shut schools run by the UCPN (Maoist).
