FUTURE LEADERS: Pitch for child-friendly TV programmes
KATHMANDU, JAN 27 -
Child right activists and mediapersons on Wednesday stressed the need for making television programmes child-friendly.
Children’s issues should become everyone’s concern, said Sumnima Tuladhar, executive coordinator of Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Centre (CWIN), speaking at an interaction on “Child Rights and Nepal Television Programmes” in the Capital.
“All TV channels should be aware that children watch their programmes. Thus, they need to be sensitive about what they are sending on air,” Tuladhar, emphasising that children’s issues should become part of all mainstream discussions on TVs.
The programme was organised to celebrate the successful running of 100 episodes of ‘Baal Sarokar’, a children’s programme run through incentive of CWIN with Nepal Television. Similarly, Mahendra Bista, news chief of Image Channel, said that TV channels are focusing more on politics. “But time has come now to prioritise social issues including children’s voices.”
“Many children’s issues broadcast on TV channels cover negative aspects only. However, if success stories are broadcast, then it could inspire others too.”
Prem Bania of News 24 Channel said there is a trend of broadcasting dance, songs and cartoons meant for children in Nepali TV channels. “The issues of child rights, their state and other contents that could alert and draw attention of the stakeholders and the government should be covered.” At the same programme, Kundan Aryal, executive chairman of Nepal Television, said that sponsored programmes have dominated TV channels.
