Special Committee takes up army integration action plan
KATHMANDU, JAN 24 - The Special Committee on Monday discussed the action plan on rehabilitation and integration of the former Maoist combatants after the formal takeover of the control of the arms and army of the Maoists.
At the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress (NC) representatives expressed sadness that late NC leader GP Koirala’s name was not mentioned during the function organised in Shaktikhor, Chitwan to bring the ex-Maoist combatants under the Special Committee.
Saying that late Koirala had played a special role in Nepal’s peace process, the NC leaders voiced concern for downplaying Koiral’’s contribution.
The committee members said the formal handover of the PLA combatants is a significant step in Nepal’s peace process. They said the task of integration and rehabilitation of the combatants should be taken ahead actively.
The meeting lauded the good management of the function in Shaktikhor despite minor weakness and discussed the action plan on integration, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum leader and a committee member, Jaya Prakash Gupta, told journalists after the meeting.
Maoist leader Janardan Sharma, who is also a member of the committee, said the adoption of Maoist combatants by the state was an important step. He added the chain of command of the Maoists will remain in the hands of Maoists until a next procedure is initiated.
