‘Govt leadership will bother Maoists’

KATHMANDU, JAN 23 - Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokharel on Sunday asserted that the UCPN (Maoists) cannot take the government leadership under the current political situation.

He remarked that it would not be in the interest of Maoists to consider the government leadership for now.

"Maoists should accept the leadership of other political parties by dropping its claim to leadership until the peace process concludes," said Minister Pokharel at a program organised in the Reporters Club today. "The Maoists should rather lead the new constitution in its capacity as the largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA).”

As the Maoists is one side of the peace agreement, he said, the party's leadership will increase expectations of the Maoist combatants that will ultimately affect the Maoist itself.

"The combatants will expect more from the Maoist-led government which can be a headache for the state," said the minister for information. "The peace process cannot be taken to a logical end under such circumstances.”

Pokharel, who is also CPN-UML secretary, lauded his party-led government for all the progress in the peace process so far.
