Indian cops ‘extorting’ Nepali workers
RUPANDEHI, JAN 21 -
Indian security personnel deployed along the Nepal-India border at Sunauli allegedly extorted money from the Nepali nationals.
Victims said that the Indian police extort up to Rs. 500 from each of them on the pretext of checking documents such as citizenship certificate and passport.
“They beat us up if we fail to cough up the demanded amount,” said a victim.
Indian security personnel recently extorted money from Nepali migrant worker Gobinda Thapa, who works at a motel at Indore in India, and four others on their way to India.
“They brought us to a police post and demanded Rs.160 each," said Thapa, adding, "We were not allowed to go unless we paid."
This is not the first case that Indian security personnel extorted Nepali migrant workers on the border, said local Surendra Chhetri. “The problem has been on for long.”
Despite various rounds of talks with the Indian officials in this regard, extortion has continued unabated, he said.
When asked, Chief District Officer Tara Nath Gautam said no complaint has been registered on the issue as of now.
“It would be helpful to raise the issue with the Indian authorities if victims lodged their complaints,” he added.
Inspector at Belahiya-based Area Police Post Gyan Bahadur Shetthi said the cases of Indian security personnel misbehaving with Nepali nationals are on the rise.
“I have apprised the centre of the problem,” said Shetthi. "The centre should take initiative to solve the problem."
