ITAHARI, JAN 20 - As frustration among Nepalis over the never-ending political wrangling grows, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal faced a local's wrath at Itahari in Sunsari on Thursday.

Forty-nine-year-old Devi Prasad Regmi, a resident of Bharaul VDC-1, slapped Khanal in a public function. Regmi, who claims to be a UML supporter, accused Khanal and other leaders of lengthening the political imbroglio in the country.

An elated Khanal was busy welcoming new entrants in his party when Regmi, posing as one of the entrants, slapped Khanal on his right cheek. Khanal's spectacles fell on the floor while he suffered minor bruises on his nose.

Khanal's security guard immediately intervened and threw Regmi out of the dais. Security personnel had a tough time protecting Regmi after other UML supporters started beating him up.

“Leaders are to blame for the crisis in the country," Regmi said.

Though Regmi claimed to be a UML supporter, he said he voted for the UCPN (Maoist) during the Constituent Assembly election hoping for a political change.

He said he was dejected after the Maoists also could not do anything for the country.

The UML district party said Regmi is a Maoist supporter and the attack on Khanal was a premeditated one. “It is learnt that Regmi came to Itahari on a motorcycle with a Maoist activist,” a local UML leader, Nanda Basnet, said.

Police have arrested Regmi. Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Thapaliya said the guilty will be punished as per the laws of the land.

The UML's Sunsari committee formed a three-member team to investigate the incident.
