OM docs summoned over infant’s death row
KATHMANDU, JAN 19 - The Department of Commerce (DoC), under the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, on Wednesday summoned a team of doctors, including senior Gynaecologist Dr. Bhola Rijal of the Chabahil-based Om Hospital to inquire about the death of an infant following an operation on the child's mother at the hospital last December.
Responding to a complaint filed by the kin of the deceased infant, DoC issued a seven-day notice to a team of doctors-Dr. Rijal, Dr. KP Devkota, Dr. Rita Manandhar, Dr. Ananda Prasad Shrestha, Amrit Shrestha, Dr. Abhusan Tuladhar and Dr. Pratima Shrestha-to appear at DoC and brief on the case.
"The Department sent the second letter to the doctors asking them to be present at DoC and provide details on the case within seven days. DoC had earlier dispatched a letter to the hospital after the child's relatives filed a complaint at the Department, but the officials did not turn up," said Kamal Thapa, a DoC investigating officer.
According to the doctors, the infant was born with its stomach being split open after an operation conducted on Chojom Dolma Sherpa by a medical team led by Dr. Rita Manandhar on 18 Dec. The infant died in the hospital the following day as it was born with Gastroschisis, a birth defect in which an infant's intestines stick out of the body due to a defect on one side of the umbilical cord.
Tenzi Lama Sherpa, the father of the deceased child, said they had also lodged complaints at National Human Rights Commission, Kathmandu District Administration Office, Nepal Medical Council and National Women Commission demanding fair probe into the incident and 6.5 million in compensation.
