Diplomats reaffirm support to peace
KATHMANDU, JAN 15 - Issuing a statement on UNMIN's departure, heads of 13 diplomatic missions in Kathmandu urged the political parties to take full responsibilities to resolve the outstanding issues of the peace process.
The British Embassy issued the statement on behalf of the heads of diplomatic missions in Nepal representing Australia, Canada, Denmark, the EU, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the UK and the USA, reiterating commitment to support the peace process.
The diplomats have appreciated the contribution made by UNMIN during its four-year presence in Nepal.
“Our countries reaffirm their full support for the peace process and request all parties to continue to respect and uphold the peace agreements.
As UNMIN departs and the deadline for completing a democratic, inclusive constitution approaches, it is all the more important to show restraint while making fresh efforts to reach consensus,” reads the release.
The international community has called on the parties to “redouble” their efforts to resolve the outstanding issues.
The diplomatic missions have also welcomed the agreement made by the government and the Maoists to handover UNMIN's monitoring responsibilities to the cross-party special committee, and have said they look forward to receiving details of the agreement.
The heads of the missions have also welcomed the ongoing engagement of the UN to support the Nepali people.
Of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia didn't take part in issuing the statement.
