KATHMANDU, JAN 10 - United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Chief Karen Landgren, who was dragged into controversy over her last report to the UN Security Council, said her report was wrongly interpreted.

Landgren, who arrived here in the Capital from New York to bid final adieu, expressed her belief that all the political parties would come to terms before the departure of the UN special political mission. The term of UNMIN, which has been monitoring Nepal’s peace process since Jan 23, 2007 after the peace agreement, is expiring on Jan. 15.

The UNMIN chief remarked that it is not necessary to hand over the weapon storage to the government. Earlier in her briefing, Landgren had said UNMIN was in no position to give monitoring-related UN equippments without agreement between the government and the UCPN-Maoist.

After the report she presented in her briefing to UN Security Council drew flak from the government, political parties and Nepal’s permanent mission to UN, Langren furnished clarification regarding the same organising a press conference in the Capital.

Critics of her report said it was not based on ground realities.

While presenting her report to the UN Security Council on Thursday, Landgren had warned of possible extreme measures by the UCPN (Maoist), Nepal Army and the President.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Landgren as his new envoy for Burundi, where she will head the scaled-down UN operation tasked with helping the Central African nation to consolidate peace and development.
