HSEB to introduce new course
BHAKTAPUR, JAN. 10, JAN 10 - In a bid to incorporate in its curricula all the subjects taught in the Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) of the Tribhuvan University, the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) is all set to introduce a dozen new subjects from the upcoming session.
The Board has prepared the final draft of the books for the new subjects and will soon table it at the Education Ministry for approval. “Once the ministry approves the draft, the books will be sent for publication,” said Bhim Lal Gurung, the Board's member-secretary. “Most new courses are vocational.”
Ram Chandra Pandey, chief of the Curriculum Development Department, said the new subjects include Agriculture, Music, Applied Beauty, Floriculture, Human Value Education, General Law, Sanskrit and Fine Arts. The feasibility study for Poultry, Dairy and Social Work is underway, said Pandey.
“We have emphasised on vocational courses to help address the unemployment problem,” Gurung told the Post. “With the PCL phased out, the students don't have alternative to Plus Two so it is a challenge for us to impart quality education.” Presently, 135 subjects are taught in four streams--Science, Humanities, Management and Education--under the HSEB. With the new subjects, the number will reach 147. The Board is also doing homework to revise various course books under the Management and Science streams. Syllabi of Biology, Physics, Accountancy and Economics will see modification this year.
Established with 1,338 students in 1990, the Board now boasts 0.95 million students studying in 3,100 Higher Secondary Schools (HSSs) across the country. Board officials maintain that the student number has considerably grown in the HSSs after the TU phased out the PCL.
