Prez, Prachanda clear prospect of extremism
KATHMANDU, JAN 07 - President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on Friday made it clear that he is not in favour of presidential rule in the country regardless of any situation.
In his meeting with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, President Yadav said that he is in favour of institutionalising the change brought about through people’s movement.
“President Yadav said that he has never thought about presidential rule in the country,” said Dahal talking to reporters after the meeting. “I am confident that he is not in favour of this [Presidential rule].”
At the meeting, Chairman Dahal clarified that his party is not in favour of going to people’s revolt right away. “I tried to reassure that the Maoists won’t go for revolt instantly,” said Dahal. “I am in favour of revolt only if there is no alternative and conspiracies are hatched against the change.”
President Yadav met Chairman Dahal and House Speaker Subash Nembang after UNMIN Chief Karn Landgren, during her briefing to the UN Security Council on Nepal’s peace process, said the prospect of a people’s revolt and of ‘presidential rule’ has triggered a sense of fear among the Nepali people.
“There have at times been fears among many Nepalis over the prospect of a ‘peoples’ revolt’ which remains an explicit Maoist threat; of the president stepping in…; or of an army-backed coup,” Landgren said in her briefing.
