16 injured as police clash with squatters
KAKARVITTA, JAN 07 -
A clash ensued between police and landless squatters in Mechinagar on Friday, after the latter obstructed the highway protesting against the municipality’s decision to give the land they were occupying to a person. Three police, one of them seriously, and 13 protestors were injured in the clash.
The clash occurred after the police tried to clear the Mechi highway obstructed by the landless squatters who were settling nearby the highway in Pyarivitta, of Mechi Municipality-11.
Police constables Shyam Acharya, Padam Rai and Keshav Subba were injured and have been undergoing treatment in Mechi Zonal Hospital. Acharya is said to be in critical condition.
The squatters took to the agitation demanding to sack Municipality Official duo Deepandra Karki and Rajan Bhetwal, who recommend the land being occupied by them. However, the police reopened the highway later by using force.
