KATHMANDU, JAN 06 -

United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) stated on Wednesday that the UCPN (Maoist)’s claims of initiating a people’s revolt and the possibility of a presidential rule and a military coup in Nepal has triggered a sense of fear in the general public.

Conducting the final briefing on the ongoing peace process in Nepal at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York yesterday, UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren warned that the peace process has been ‘largely deadlocked’ and the chances of its failure are high owing to the indulgence of the political leaders in their personal motives.

Landgren said that the ongoing peace process will have to face proliferating dangers until the political situation in the country overcomes the current transitional phase.

However, she added that the nation has witnessed some progress on the processes of statute drafting and UCPN (Maoist) People’s Liberation Army (PLA) management.

“There have at times been fears among many Nepalis over the prospect of a ‘peoples’ revolt’ which remains an explicit Maoist threat; of the president stepping in…; or of an army-backed coup. Any such measures would sorely threaten peace and Nepal’s fragile democracy,” the UN News Centre quoted Landgreen as telling in her brefing.

Landgren warned that the possibility of a legal vacuum in the nation is significant because the political parties have not yet settled upon an alternative, which would continue the supervision of Maoist arms and combatants after UNMIN’s departure.

UNMIN informed the UNSC that the lack of coordination among the political parties has precluded the formation of a new government, which, consequently, has made the completion of the peace process uncertain.

On the occasion, Landgren expressed satisfaction stating that despite the delay in the peace process, UNMIN was able to perform its tasks as per the mandate throughout its stay in Nepal.

UNMIN’s current term is expiring on Jan. 15.
