Maoists to propose UNMIN term extension
KATHMANDU, DEC 23 -
The office bearers meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) has decided to float a proposal to extend the tenure of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) at the meeting of the major three parties scheduled Thursday.
The last term of the UN special political mission, which has been monitoring Nepal’s peace process since Jan.23, 2007, is due to expire on Jan. 15.
Likewise, the meeting has also decided to withdrw the proposal put forth at the special House session if the NC and the UML presents its aletnative.
The Maoists had registered a proposal for amending the Parliamentary Regulations in order to put an end to the ongoing prime ministerial elections and scrap Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel’s candidacy for the post on Friday.
The meeting comes at the time when the major two allies of the outgoing coalition—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—reached an agreement to foil the proposals tabled by the Maoist at the special session of the Legislature-Parliament.
