Number of migrant workers goes up by 27.5 percent
According to the data released by the Department of Foreign Employment, Malaysian labour market absorbed 52,016 Nepali individuals
KATHMANDU, DEC 22 -
The first five months (Mid-July to Mid-Dec) of the current fiscal year has witnessed a growth of 27.53 percent in the number of out-bound migrant workers. A total of 127,083 individuals left the country for working in various overseas labour destinations. In the same period last year, a total of 99,601 workers had embarked for foreign employment.
The number of individuals leaving the country for foreign employment this year has been increasing continuously since Mid-September, especially with the increasing demand from the largest labour market Malaysia.
“The growth is supported by the increased demand from counties like Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Baharain,” said Tilak Ranabhat, immediate past president of Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies. “Hiring from Qatar was not so good in the same period last year.”
According to a data released by the Department of Foreign Employment, Malaysian labour market absorbed 52,016 Nepali individuals including 670 female workers so far this year. This is 40.93 percent of the total workers leaving the country for foreign employment in the first five month. Qatar and Saudi Arabia hired 27,923 and 23,430 Nepali individuals, respectively. Likewise, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait offered jobs to 15,063 and 3,238 Nepali workers, respectively.
Djibouti, Uganda, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, Nigeria, Mauritius, Ireland, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Burmuda provided employment to one Nepali each in the first five months. Around 60 countries across the world hired Nepali workers. The government permits foreign employment agencies to send workers to 108 countries.
In the meantime, labour outsourcing agencies are worried about the government’s recent provision to issue Machine Readable Passport (MRP) only after six weeks from the application date.
Earlier, it used to take two days for obtaining a passport. “This will have some negative impact on foreign employment business,” said Ranabhat.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced to distribute MRP from Dec. 26. The Central Passport Office has started collecting passport applications since Dec. 19.
