KATHMANDU, DEC 21 - Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong said on Tuesday that the peace process would not be affected even in the absence of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).

He remarked that no foreign assistance is necessary provided that there is honesty among the political parties.

“Our peace process has gained momentum not because of anyone’s mediation, hence a mediator is not necessary,” said the peace minister at the Reporter’s Club in the Capital today. “Peace process will not face difficulties due to lack of UNMIN, so there is no significance of it [UNMIN].”

Minister Chemjong claimed that the Maoist proposal to extend UNMIN’s term is part of the strategy to forestall the plan to bring the Maoist combatants under the purview of special committee.

“This has clarified that the Maoist does not want to integrate its combatants,” said Peace Minster Chemjong. “The Maoists want to fulfill its interests by protracting the peace process through UNMIN-term-extension, but the government won’t let it happen.”

Meanwhile, at the same programme, Maoist Secretary CP Gajurel warned that the farewell to UNMIN without completing the army integration process could put the peace process in peril. “The peace process can’t be taken to a logical end without UNMIN as it is a part of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA),” said the Maoist leader. “The CPA should be revised, if UNMIN is dissociated from the peace process.”
