Disqualified fighters left high and dry
DANG, DEC 20 - Tufan Singh Kathayat, a disqualified UCPN (Maoist) combatant from Dang district, had never imagined he would face such hardships after being discharged from the cantonment he was once in.
To his dismay, Kathayat, a permanent resident of Kohalpur-4, finds it hard to adjust in society. Kathayat complains that the society treats him as an enemy even after the peace agreement. "Some people in the society still behave with us in a strange manner," he said.
"I was forced to carry a rifle instead of going to school. Uneducated, I am worried about my chances of landing a job," he lamented. Kathayat is only a case in point. Scores of disqualified combatants are forced to live in misery. They say they are left high and dry in the society without an effective livelihood programme.
Kathayat is in Lamahi in search of a job. According to him, there are around two dozen combatants like him in the district. There was an agreement between the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) and the government to provide the disqualified combatants with assistance for their rehabilitation.
"We have not received any assistance from the government so far," said Sunil Basnet of Bardiya.
