Electrocuted body rots at TUTH
KATHMANDU, NOV 29 -
Kin of Dawa Lama, who was electrocuted seven weeks ago, have refused to take his body from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj.
They are demanding compensation from the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the death. The 17-year-old, hailing from Makawanpur district, died after receiving an electric shock on Oct. 21 at Boudha. An employee at the Bouddha Sanitation Centre, Lama had touched an electricity pole while cleaning the area. He died undergoing treatment at the Chabahil-based Medicare Hospital.
Organising a press conference on Sunday, the Late Dawa Lama Victims’ Struggle Committee warned the NEA to provide either Rs. 1 million as compensation or a job for one of his family members within three days or face consequences. They have also sought the resignation of NEA Executive Director Jibendra Jha.
“The incident took place due to NEA’s negligence,” said Indra Bahadur Tamang, who coordinates the struggle committee. “Despite repeated appeals by locals, the NEA did not care to repair the electricity line.” He added they would not receive the body until their demands are met.
Meanwhile, Jha said the case would be discussed in the upcoming meeting of the NEA management. “The meeting will decide the issue,” he said, expressing ignorance when the meeting would be held. Many electricity poles across the city are lying in pathetic conditions for want of repair.
