KATHMANDU, NOV 27 -

Senior leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba has said advanced technologies in agriculture and equitable distribution of land were crucial to bringing about an agricultural revolution in Nepal.

Addressing a programme organised here to launch the books titled “Poverty Linkages to Productive Efficiency and Access to Land” and “Raja Birendra ra Nepal ma Maobad (King Birendra and Maoism in Nepal)”, written by Chandra Bahadur Adhikari and Gopal Koirala, respectively, Deuba said land division for the sake of equitable distribution was against agricultural revolution. “Increasing the productivity of land is the most vital thing for agricultural revolution,” he said. “But, dividing the land into pieces may harm its overall productivity.”

“Access of all to agricultural products is a more scientific way to talk about justified distribution,” he added.

Speaking in another context, Deuba denounced the UCPN (Maoist) for creating a hustle in the Parliament while stopping the finance minister from announcing the budget on Nov. 19. “The Maoists should admit their mistake and apologise before the parliament as well as the public.”

Commenting on Adhikari’s work, Prof. Biswambar Pyakurel said the book was able to raise the basic issues of land management in Nepal.

“The book which is in favour of scientific agriculture claims that use of new technologies would increase agricultural production in the country by 27 percent,” he said.
