KATHMANDU, NOV 27 -

With the new release Break Ke Baad, director Danish Aslam strays from the traditional romantic plotline and makes a film that is not about starting a relationship, but about what happens after a break up. Childhood friends Aaliya Khan (Deepika Padukone) and Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) have been each other—s better-halves for as long as they have known. But as their relationship nears its eleventh year, their differences begin to become apparent.

Aaliya is an impulsive, ambitious girl who knows what she wants from life. Abhay is her polar opposite: unhappy with his job but afraid to take risks. So it is Aaliya who decides to risk their relationship when she decides to take up a mass communication course at a university in Australia. The freedom-seeking Aaliya finds wings there, and on receiving a worried phone call from a slightly protective boyfriend, decides on an impulse to “take a break” from their relationship.

But though the story is different from the usual rom-coms, its execution is similar. Needless to say, there are unrealistic elements (like Abhay arriving at Australia, getting a job as a cabbie and starting his own restaurant without immigration hassles) and the ending is just too predictable. Also, the characters seem plastered on to the actors: they don—t seem very genuine. However, what works in the movie is really the essence of it: The film unfolds at a good pace, and the story is relatable to youngsters. The message is that sometimes love isn—t enough to make a relationship work. Personal space and self-discovery are equally important. As the characters realize that there is more realism to a relationship than they—d thought, the audience too, gets an understanding of it. And this alone makes Break Ke Baad a good-enough watch.
