SIRAHA, NOV 16 -

Urmila Chaudhary, said to be “the tallest woman” of Nepal, is bedridden with paralysis at her home in Dhodhana, Siraha district.

The 18-year-old teenager, who measures 7 feet and 6 inch, had been admitted to Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) a couple of months ago after she tried to kill herself by consuming poison “as she felt uncomfortable with her incredible stature”. Doctors, however, managed to save her but later she was diagnosed with diabetes.

Doctors have advised her to take regular medication and maintain her diet to keep her sugar level at check, said Urmila’s mother Channar Devi. “Due to lack of money I could neither continue her medication nor feed her properly and her illness got worse.”

Channar Devi said that she had already sold off her livestock and racked up enough debt for her daughter’s treatment, and now she has no money left for Urmila’s care. “Nobody would lend me money now and my daughter’s condition is deteriorating.”

The money sent by Urmila’s brother, who works at a garment factory in Kathmandu, is barely enough to run the household, let alone buy medicines.

“My daughter immediately needs treatment which I cannot afford,” Channar Devi lamented. “Managing

two square meals has become hard these days. Everyday is a gruelling struggle for us.”

Channar Devi has appealed to the government and other concerned sides for her daughter’s treatment.
