Regional zoo plan in limbo

RUPANDEHI, NOV 13 -

The delay in bringing in the full budget has hit the government's plan to construct a regional zoo in Rupandehi district.

The two-year plan to expand Butwal-based Mani Mukundasen Park into a regional zoo is on hold due to lack of budget. The plan was drawn up two years ago to attract foreign and internal visitors targeting the tourism year 2011, said Chairman of the park management committee Moti Raj Gyawali.

The committee had submitted a report to the Finance Ministry with a budget estimate of around Rs. 80 million to implement the plan. “Construction work for the park has been halted as the government has not released any budget so far,” said Gyawali.

However, the committee has started general work such as building walls around the periphery of the park and bringing wild animals and birds with its own income. Other work such as buying land for the purpose (around six bighas) and other work is at a standstill, said Gyawali.

Durbar of Mani Mukundasen, Butwal Smarak, statues of dignitaries among others are the main attraction for visitors to the park that covers around 11 bighas of land, established in 1997.

“The zoo will be the second biggest in the country and the main tourist destination when the expansion process is completed,” added Gyawali.
