ARGHAKHANCHI, NOV 11 -

The Activists of Young Communist League (YCL), the youth wing of the UCPN (Maoist), allegedly beat up a CPN-UML local leader at Bangi in Arg-hakhanchi district on Tuesday night. Mekha Ba-hadur Karki, Argha Village Committee Chairman of the UML, was seriously injured in the attack.

The UML district committee said YCL cadres including Rem Bahadur Khadka and Narayan Pandey thrashed Karki while he was watching the Maoists’ Deusi/Bhailo programme. “The YCL members attacked Karki in the presence of Maoist district in-charge Chandra Bahadur Khadka accusing him of spying on their party,” the UML said.

According to Bishal, the victim’s son, the YCL men encircled Karki and started thrashing him severely. They left Karki when he fell unconscious.

Karki, who was

rushed to Arghakhanchi District Hospital for treatment, was referred to Bhairahawa-based Univ-ersal Medical College. He sustained deep injuries in his head, eyes and various other parts of the body.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, UML district chair Ramji Prasad Ghimire denounced the attack and demanded strong action against the YCL activists involved in the assault.

“The incident shows that the Maoists have not given up violent activities since they

manhandled Karki in the presence of its district in-charge,” read the statement.

Khadka, however, denied his involvement in the attack and claimed

the incident was a personal brawl among the inebriated guys. He said the party took the accused under control and handed over to police for necessary action.

“We arrested the accused duo-Rem Bahadur and Narayan-with the help of the Maoists. The investigation into the incident is underway,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Buddiraj Gurung.
