Bara teacher abducted, murdered
NIJGAD (BARA), OCT 31 -
In the latest incident of worsening security situation in the central Tarai, unidentified gunmen abducted and subsequently murdered a schoolteacher at Inarwamal VDC in Bara district on Saturday night.
A group of about 10 armed men abducted Suresh Patel from Batara village and shot him dead near Jamunikhola, police said.
Forty-year-old Patel, the headmaster at a local primary school, was returning home at Mahendra Adarsha VDC with his friend on a motorcycle. The abductors took the pillion rider Sujit Koiri, a local businessman, under control and tied his hands and legs before they murdered Patel.
Police took the eyewitness Koiri under control to inquire about the killing. We are investigating into the incident and will bring the guilty to book soon, said Superintendent of Police Manoj Neupane.
Talking to local journalists over telephone, the area secretary of Pratik-led Akhil Tarai Mukti Morcha, JK Singh, owned up to the killing.
On Sunday, the district-based teachers staged a protest at Kalaiya demanding immediate arrest of the guilty and compensation to the victim's family, among others. The protest rally went through the main thoroughfares of the town with Patel's body.
The bereaved family received the body after the local administration assured them to arrest the criminal and provide compensation to the family.
Meanwhile, Nepal Teachers Union announced indefinite closure of schools in the district from Monday. “We will continue the protest unless the authorities fulfill our demands,” said Devendra Giri, Bara chairman of the union.
Eight schoolteachers have been gunned down in the past two years in Bara alone. More than a month ago, armed men murdered Subas Pandey, a teacher at Kalaiya-based Durga Higher Secondary School.
Sources claim that police have not arrested even a single criminal involved in the killings so far.
