Starved Bajura losing weight
BAJURA, OCT 27 -
Bajura dwellers are reeling under food crisis. A steep decrease in crop production has made the matter worse.
The crops harvested this time around normally last for six months. “But this time, we are hardly getting two square meals,” said a local, Lal Bahadur Buda of Chhatara. "It is almost sure that locals will be forced to buy food from after the Tihar festival."
Another local Prem Bahadur Raut of Dogadi said he had harvested four quintals of rice last year. "But it dropped to one quintal this year," he said. A sharp decline in potato production at Dogadi, Gudukhati and adjoining VDCs has added to woes of villagers, who solely depend on this vegetable throughout the year, as these areas remain dry all the time and production of other crops is almost impossible. “We are having a
hard time sustaining ourselves due to the sharp decline in potato production this year,” said Hikmat Raut of Dogadi.
Agriculture experts attribute the decrease in crops to incessant rainfall and various diseases. “Incessant rainfall during the harvesting time led to a fall in the production,” said Bishwo Raj Pandit, an officer of District Agriculture Development Office, Bajura.
According to the agriculture office, around 9,000 metric tonnes of food used to be produced in the district in the past years. "However, the production is only 4000 metric tonnes this year and the district will face severe food crisis,” Pandit added.
