Population growth rate ‘on track’

KATHMANDU, OCT 25 -

A report published by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that Nepal’s total population has reached 29.9 million till this year and will have reached 40 million by 2050.

The estimates have been made on the basis of the average growth

rate of 1.8 percent seen between 2005 and 2010.

The report titled “State of world population 2010” also shows that so far 19 percent of Nepal’s population lives in urban areas. The urban population is estimated to have gone up by five percent between 2005 and 2010.

Basing its findings on Nepal’s education indicator, the report has revealed a gulf between the illiteracy rate of males and females below 15 years of age.

In this age group, the males’ illiteracy rate is 28.9 percent while that of the females is 54.6 percent.
