Gov’t to ask clarification on Maoists’ china trip
KATHMANDU, OCT 23 -
Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong said on Saturday the government will seek clarification from United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) on the recent China trip made by Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) commanders.
He remarked that a dozen Maoist PLA commanders went on a visit to China without informing the Special Committee on Integration, Supervision and Rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.
UNMIN has been monitoring the cantoned Maoist combatants as part of the ongoing peace process.
“The government is seeking clarification from the UN special mission as the Maoist PLA combatants have not come under the purview of the special committee in practice though they are in principle,” said the minister, at a programme organised at the Reporter’s club in the capital today.
Explaining that he learnt about the Maoist commanders’ China visit through media reports, Minister Chemjong remarked that UNMIN, which has been monitoring the Maoist combatants round the clock, should clarify the intention of the Maoists’ visit.
On the other hand, Maoist Secretary CP Gajurel claimed the special committee should furnish clarification on combatants’ visit as they have come under the command of the special committee from the party.
A member of the Special Committee and Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader, Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat remarked that the visit of Maoist Cadres should be investigated. He elaborated that the issue will be raised in the Special Committee.
Last week, a dozen Maoists cadres had gone to China under the leadership of Barshaman pun. They returned on Oct. 23 citing the trip as a “personal visit”.
