Woman kills self in custody
KATHMANDU, OCT 20 -
Forty-six-year-old Sita B.K. of Ramechhap district committed suicide in police custody on Monday morning.
She was in police custody since Saturday for attempting to murder her daughter-in-law, police said. Police said that she badly injured her daughter-in-law Masali B.K. after hitting her with a sickle on Oct. 12 and fled.
A team of police personnel deployed from the Metropolitan Police Circle in Thimi had arrested her on Oct. 16 from her relative’s house at Lokanthali-16 in Bhaktapur.
Sita hung herself from the ventilation rod inside the custody room at 6 a.m. Monday morning. She tore the bed sheet and used it as a rope to hang herself.
Chief of the Metropolitan Police Circle DSP Radhika Khadka said that B.K. might have committed suicide when all the police personnel had gone for the regular flag-hoisting ceremony on the premises of the Police Circle.
“We found some scraps of bedsheets in the bathroom. This means she had attempted suicide earlier also,” said Khadka.
Khadka added that her husband said that her mental condition was not good over the last few weeks.
B.K.’s body has been handed over to her family.
Khadka added that B.K.’s daughter-in-law is undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu and that she is in a critical condition.
