KATHMANDU, OCT 10 -

The Parliament is conducting its 12th round of elections for the post of prime minister on Sunday, as the previous rounds failed to fill the void left by former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.

The 12th run-off since the former prime minister resigned remains still uncertain as the political parties have still failed to forge consensus.

Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel is expected to face another defeat in the prime ministerial poll that is scheduled for today.

Poudel was left alone in the race to the post of prime minister after his rival, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, withdrew his candidacy before the eighth round. His decision to drop out of the race followed a three-point pact with the CPN-UML.

The already troubled political uncertainty has worsened due to parliament’s failure to elect a new prime minister—now three months after Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal stepped down from his post.

As per the parliamentary regulations, the elections will continue until a candidate secures a simple majority (301) of the votes in the 601-member parliament.
