KATHMANDU, OCT 06 -

The Global Fund (GF), an international health financing institution, has provided Rs. 2.31 billion to Nepal to fight Tuberculosis (TB).

An agreement to this effect was signed between the Fung and Nepal on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). The National TB Centre will be the principal recipient.

“The support will cover the national gap from 2010 to 2015 to control TB,” read the statement issued by MoHP. The Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) had made necessary arrangement for the grant signing process.

According to the statement, MoHP and the Fund are working out to sign on the agreements equivalent to Rs. 1.20 billion (US $17 million) to fight Malaria as well. They will soon sign the agreement in this regard.

The global body had decided to provide the support based on Nepal's appeal in 2009. CCM Nepal had submitted a grant proposal as per the national TB strategy in 2009 after in-depth review of National TB programme and MoHP response.

"The support aims to increase the TB case detection rate to 82 percent nationally and at least 70 percent in all districts by 2015," the release stated. Subsequently, it has also targeted to achieve and maintain the treatment success rates of 90 percent by 2015 nationally and 85 percent minimally in all districts, to reduce mortality, morbidity and transmission of multi drug-resistant tuberculosis through effective management and increase case detection to rate to 82 per cent by 2015.
