Deuba pledges party unity
KATHMANDU, OCT 03 - Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba has said would deliver his best to maintain unity within the party.
In a tea reception organised by Deuba at his residence in Budhanilkantha to congratulate the newly elected Central Working Committee (CWC) members of the NC, Deuba stated, "I am fully dedicated to maintain the party's internal unity."
However, he denied commenting on a new direction the party would take, especially after the 12th General Convention (GC) that concluded with his defeat at the fight for the post of party president. The newly elected President Sushil Koirala defeated him in the race.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel said the programme organised by Deuba at his residence indicated the party's internal unity.
“The party has not been divided,” Poudel said, speaking to the media. “This shows we are all united.”
Apart from Bimalendra Nidhi, Minendra Rijal and Prakash Saran Mahat, among others, from the Deuba camp, Poudel, Ram Saran Mahat and Prakash Man Singh from the Koirala-led establishment camp were also present in the programme.
Koirala, however, could not attend the reception due to his fragile health condition. Koirala has not convened a CWC meeting after new leaders took helm of the party.
The recently concluded GC saw tough competition between these two factions for all three key posts of the party bearers-president, general secretary and treasurer.
While Koirala himself and Prakash Man Singh from his panel swept the posts of president and general secretary respectively, Chitra Lekha Yadav from the Deuba camp was victorious at the treasurer's tag.
