Nihita and mom clapped in prison
KATHMANDU, SEP 28 -
The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday convicted the purported wife of ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj, Nihita Biswas, and her mother, advocate Sakuntala Thapa, on a contempt of court charge.
The duo has been sentenced to seven days in prison and asked to pay a fine of Rs. 50 each.
A joint bench of SC judges Bala Ram KC and Ram Kumar Prasad Shah convicted them on the charge of using abusive language against SC judges and the court.
While Thapa is also a lawyer of Sobhraj, Biswas, 22, claims she is married to the serial killer. The SC also banned Thapa from assuming any position of a judge in the future. “The court concluded that the duo questioned the impartiality of the court and its decision,” the verdict read.
“Thus, as per the SC Act 2048 7 (1), the court decides to imprison them for seven days and impose a fine of Rs.50 each.”
The decision also reads that as per the Civil Code 11 (1) (2) and (3), the duo would only be asked to pay Rs. 25 per day in addition to the Rs. 50 fine if they sign a “commitment paper” that says that they would never act the way they did again and would abide by the rules and regulations of the court.
On July 30, the duo had drawn media attention by claiming that the judges took bribe and ruled against ‘innocent’ Sobhraj. The SC had convicted Sobhraj and sentenced to life in prison for murdering an American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in Nepal in 1975.
Following the duo’s outburst on the court premises, advocates Rajan Adhikari and Shanta Sedhai had filed a contempt of court petition against them for their “offensive remarks” against the court.
