Festivals at hand, cops plan special security
KATHMANDU, SEP 25 -
The Metropolitan Police is all set to launch a special security plan from Sunday to avert any untoward incident during the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals in the Capital.
Apart from regular policing, the Metropolitan Police Range Hanumandhoka will beef up security and up vigil in the Capital so that people can celebrate the festivals without fear and free of criminal incidents. Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kharel said the metropolitan police will increase the number of police personnel, pickets and check posts at all places that are highly vulnerable to crime in the Capital.
"Reviewing the past trend of crime, we will give more attention to patrolling on cycles and motorcycles with Control Room Vehicles," said SP Kharel, in-charge of the Metropolitan Police Range Hanumandhoka.
Every year, the police come up with a special security plan during the festive season when criminal activities go up compared to other days.
Burglary, looting and assault increase during the festival season every year as many people living in Kathmandu go back to villages to celebrate Dashain and Tihar.
In coordination with the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, the police will deploy additional plainclothes policemen in places where more financial transactions take place. Police say some of the busy thoroughfares such as New Road, Thamel, Asan, Putalisadak and New Baneshwore will be under constant surveillance.
"In addition, policemen riding bicycles and motorcycles will patrol inner parts of the Capital where heavy vehicles cannot pass through, said SP Kharel.
In this connection, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Nepal Police Headquarters have already directed security officials to be pro-active in maintaining law and order and increase vigil in the Capital.
Apart from the Valley-based security plan, the Metropolitan Police has also introduced a special security package in the Bagmati Zone considering that it was not possible to combat crime in the Valley without an integrated approach in coordination with the neighbouring district-based security personnel.
The police officials also agreed to bolster security at the local level and entry points as well as appoint a focal officer in each district of the zone to co-ordinate with the valley police and to share intelligence among the units for quick response.
