Congress readies election preparation
KATHMANDU, SEP 20 -
The election committee of the Nepali Congress (NC) has said the General Convention (GC) elections of the party scheduled for Tuesday will be held in three different phases. The elections will be held at the Academy Hall in Kamaladi, Kathmandu.
In the first stage, voters will be given ballot papers of nominations from the open and zone-wise competition. Once they have voted for this category, the GC representatives will be taken to the second booth where they will have to vote for the nominees from the reservation quotas, including the Madhesis, Dalits, Women and others.
The third phase of the voting will be done for key posts, including that of the party president, general secretary and treasurer. Altogether nine kinds of ballot papers have been prepared with different colours.
"A total of 360 voters can vote at a time," said Basudev Acharya, an election official. "Around 150 volunteers will be deployed to facilitate the voters. No one can re-enter the venue once he/she has completed voting."
According to the committee, while votes for other posts of the party, including the general secretary, treasurer and central members, will be taken to the party office at Sanepa for counting, those cast for the post of party president will be counted at the venue immediately after the elections.
"The winner has to garner 50 percent plus one vote of the total votes to secure his position as the party president," said Acharya. "If the leaders fail to secure the required number of votes, a runoff election will be held on Wednesday."
Altogether 3,088 voters are participating in the NC elections.
