Diarrhoea wreaks havoc in Gulmi villages, 100 taken ill

GULMI, SEP 19 -

More than 100 people were taken ill due to an outbreak of diarrhoea that spread in remote Myalpokhari and Malayagiri VDCs of Gulmi district in the past two weeks.

Assistant Health Worker Jayalal Panthi at Myalpokhari Sub-health Post said around 70 people fell ill due to diarrhoea in ward No 1 and 9 in Myalpokhari VDC. He said the Dalit settlements in the village were hit hard by the waterborne disease. 

“We are doing the best to contain the disease,” said Panthi, adding, “We have referred some of the sick to Sandhikharka, the district headquarters of Arghakhanchi.” Similarly, over 30 people fell ill in the neighbouring Malayagiri VDC.

Dr. Bheshraj Pokharel, chief at Gulmi District Hospital, they are sending a medical team to the affected areas soon.

Meanwhile, scores of people were taken ill due to typhoid and viral fever in about a dozen VDCs in northwestern part of Baglung district.

Tarakhola, Hil, Amarbhumi and Harichaur are hit hard by the diseases. This has seriously affected several schools in the area. “Our school is greatly affected since three teachers and over 100 students have been suffering from typhoid and viral fever,” said headmaster Bhim Bahadur Gharti at Argal-based Amar Primary School.

District Education Officer Mukti Singh Thakuri said about a dozen schools in the area asked him to close the schools citing illness of teachers and students.
