Full consensus vital for UNMIN: DeLisi
KATHMANDU, SEP 10 -
US Ambassador to Nepal Scott H. DeLisi said on Friday that it will be impossible for United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) to continue to operate effectively in the country without a full consensus on its role.
In press statement issued today, DeLisi said although the question of UNMIN’s monitoring role needs to be discussed and agreed upon by the parties, the more compelling need is to address the core challenges to completion of the peace process.
"We hope that the parties will keep their focus on those critical questions and not allow debate over monitoring or UNMIN’s role to keep them from making the hard political choices necessary to fully and finally implement the peace agreement," reads the statement.
The statement comes following a joint meeting by DeLisi, UK Ambassador and the French Charge d’Affaires with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to seek clarification from the Government and Maoists on their views of the future of UNMIN’s mandate on Thursday.
