Maoists flay apex court verdict
KATHMANDU, SEP 07 -
The UCPN (Maoist) has expressed serious concern over the Supreme Court (SC) decision to slap a life term on Bal Krishna Dhungel, a Maoist lawmaker elected from Okhaldhunga Constituency No. 2.
The court had convicted Dhungel of murdering Ujjwan Kumar Shrestha on June 24, 1998, when the Maoist insurgency was going on. On Sunday, the apex court issued the full text of its Jan. 3 judgment.
Issuing a statement, the Maoist party said the SC decision goes against the letter and spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA).
“Clause 5.2.7 of the CPA states that both sides guarantee to withdraw accusations, claims, complaints and cases under consideration alleged against various individuals due to political reasons during the insurgency,” read the statement.
“The Supreme Court's verdict devalues this essence of the CPA and is against the peace process. We strongly denounce such an irresponsible step. The UCPN (Maoist) also demands that all the accusations filed during the insurgency period be immediately taken back by the state,” the statement added.
Though the court had issued its verdict on Jan. 3, police have not arrested Dhungel yet.
