NC demands probe into Mahara-Chinese tape scandal

KATHMANDU, SEP 07 -  

A delegation of Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Working Committee has demanded an investigation into the controversial tape recording of the phone conversation between Maoist Foreign Department Chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara and a Chinese authority.

The NC leaders put forward the demand during a meeting with Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subash Chandra Nemwang at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar. They remarked that the tape scandal has made a mockery of parliamentary honor.

In a controversial tape publicized and aired by various mainstream Media earlier this week, Maoist leader Mahara is recorded asking for Rs. 500 million from a Chinese official for ensuring the Maoist victory in the ongoing prime ministerial election that is protracting in an unprecedented manner.

The meeting comes in the run up to the seventh round of parliamentary elections for the post of prime minister.

NC leader Bimelandra Nidhi has demanded that the controversial tape should be investigated before the seventh round of elections.

In response, CA Chair Nembang assured to take the initiative to probe into the scandalous tape.

Meanwhile, activists of Human Rights and Civil Society on Tuesday drew the attention of CA Chair Nembang towards the involvement of CA members in undemocratic and immoral conduct in recent days.

The activists held discussion with the CA chairman at his office in Singhadurbar this afternoon.

They drew attention towards the controversial tape in which UCPN (Maoist) leader has demanded Rs. 500 million with a Chinese authority and remarked that such news reports has tarnished the image of parliamentary process.

The activists also requested the CA Chairman form a probe panel to investigate the controversy.

Sushil Pyakurel, Kanak Mani Dixit, Subodh Raj Pyakurel, Tika Ram Bhattarai, Bhimarjun Acharya, Shambhu Thapa and Dipendra Jha, among others, were present at the meeting.
