KATHMANDU, SEP 06 - It was sensation, flourish, climax...and anti-climax. The prime ministerial election ended inconclusively for the sixth time on Sunday after both UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel failed to secure a majority.

The parties have agreed to hold the seventh round of election at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

In the event that also fails, the eighth round will be held after Sept. 26, after the NC completes its five-day General Convention slated for Sept 17-21. The Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF), a key member of the Samyukata Loktantrik Madesi Morcha (SLMM) boycotted Sunday’s election to exert pressure on the alliance to give up its “neutral position and participate in government formation.” Three other partners of the Madhesi front - Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik), Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party and Sadbhawana Party — along with another major vote bloc CPN-UML continued their abstention.

Dahal garnered 240 votes while Poudel secured 122 votes in the

599-member Parliament. The Nepal Majdoor Kishan Party, Nepal Pariwar Dal, Rastriya Janamukti Party, Nepal Rastriya Party, Sadbhawana (Giri) and CPN (ML) Samajbadi backed the Maoists and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and the Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) voted for NC. NC demanded that the seventh round of election be held after its 12th General Convention.
