Journo faces sexual harassment charge

KATHMANDU, SEP 02 -

Kathmandu District Police Office, Hanumandhoka, is preparing to file a case against journalist Bikash Thapa under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.

A case will be filed against him under the Act at court for sexually harassing journalist Maina Dhital of Kantipur daily through email and SMS message, said Senior Superintendent of Police Rana Bahadur Chand. Thapa was also a senior reporter with Kantipur.

Chand said police detained Thapa as per the complaint of Dhital that she was harassed sexually by him repeatedly through email and SMS message. "He will be taken to Kathmandu District Court today to seek more time to keep him in custody for investigation," the SSP said. 

He also expressed commitment to not to leave any stone unturned for investigation into the case.

Under the Act, a person shall be liable to the punishment with imprisonment up to five years and or with a fine of at least Rs. 100,000 or with both.

Earlier, Kantipur Publications had suspended Thapa after the case came to light.
