Garbage dumping resumes
KATHMANDU, SEP 02 - Collection and disposal of the garbage produced in the Valley that was halted since last Monday has resumed on Thursday as Aletar locals have withdrawn their agitation for 15 days.
Agitators were ready to allow dumping at Aletar in Nuwakot district on Wednesday as per the request of the officials at the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRMC) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). “We have given the authorities 15 days to fulfill our demands,” Lal Bahadur Balami, an agitator, told the Post. “However, we will come up with further programmes of agitation if our demands are not addressed.”
“The collection resumed on Thursday as the agitators have given a positive signal for it,” said SWMRMC Director Sumitra Amatya. “We are ready even to use force if they stick to their protest.” On Wednesday morning, the government decided to deploy around 300 personal for the disposal of the garbage piling on the streets beginning Thursday. The government took the decision to this effect after a new group appeared at the landfill site on Tuesday with new demands, sending back all 17 vehicles filled with garbage.
