Govt all set to deploy police to resume garbage disposal
KATHMANDU, SEP 01 -
The government has decided to deploy 300 police personnel to dispose the garbage piling on the streets of the Kathmandu valley at the Aletar landfill site from Thursday.
A senior official at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) seeking anonymity told the government has decided to mobilise police personnel as locals at the Aletar landfill site have been repeatedly obstructing garbage disposal with various demands.
The government took the decision to this effect after a new group emerged at the landfill site on Tuesday with new demands, sending back all 17 vehicles filled with garbage, halting the disposal.
After a weeklong halt in garbage disposal, the protesting locals had forged a three-point agreement with the government on Monday resuming the same.
However, a new group emerged and halted garbage disposal from yesterday.
The officials are holding discussions with the protesting group to end the row through talks.
“Police personnel will be deployed if the locals continue to obstruct garbage disposal,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, Divisional Chief of Environment Department at KMC.
There are at least 1700 tonnes of garbage awaiting disposal in the streets of Kathmandu valley, Shrestha informed.
