Nihita, mom not cleared of charge
KATHMANDU, AUG 28 - An Amicus Curiae on Friday accused Nihita Biswas, the purported wife of convicted serial killer Charles Sobhraj, and her advocate mother Shakuntala Thapa of committing a serious offence in connection with the contempt of court charge.
The mother and daughter have been facing contempt of court charges since the duo accused the judges of upholding a lower court order to sentence Sobhraj for life, on July 30 under the influence of bribe. Advocates Hari Krishna Karki and Purna Man Shakya put forth arguments in the case. Shakya asked the Supreme Court to refer the case to the Bar Council for disciplinary action while Karki demanded termination of the case. The next hearing on the case has been slated for September 13. Earlier six senior law experts were chosen as an amicus curie to advise the court what should be done regarding the contempt charge on Nihita. Lawyer Ramji Bista argued the media should have exercised censorship instead of airing the duo’s accusations.
