Aletar locals obstruct garbage disposal
KATHMANDU, AUG 22 - With the locals of Okaharpauwa in Nuwakot district threatening against garbage disposal at the Aletar landfill site, waste collection in Kathmandu Valley is likely to be halted from Sunday.
The locals have demanded that 25 locals be employed as drivers and helpers in the private organisations that dump garbage there.
Besides the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), some 35 private companies dump waste at the Aletar landfill site under the direction of the KMC.
Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of the Environment Department at the KMC, said the locals asked the drivers not to dump garbage at the Aletar site from Sunday.
“We are trying to find appropriate people to deal with the issue,” said Shrestha, stating that a private company is unable to employ 25 people as demanded by the locals.
Private companies have not been able to dispose garbage for the last three days due to locals’ obstruction.
“Demanding employment the locals manhandled our drivers and asked not to dispose garbage again,” said Basu Upreti, former chairman of Solid Waste Management Association Nepal, an umbrella organisation of private companies.
“Most of our work of collecting garbage takes place in Kathmandu, so, how can we provide them jobs in their area,” he added.
