UNMIN can be bidden farewell: Chemjong
KATHMANDU, AUG 21 -
Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong said on Saturday that United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), which is assisting the peace process in the country, can be bidden goodbye.
He added that a dependable mechanism of the Nepalese can be formed based on political consensus, which can monitor the UCPN (Maoist) combatants and the arms kept in the container.
Speaking at an interaction programme in the Capital, Chemjong underscored that it is time to think about this issue because UNMIN’s role in the peace process has become a topic of debate and its neutrality has been questioned.
“The peace process of the nation should be piloted by the general public and the political parties, not UNMIN,” Chemjong said, “UNMIN’s presence or absence will not affect the country in any way.”
Likewise, Chemjong said that withdrawal of the prime ministerial candidacies and formation of a consensus government has no alternative.
Also present in the programme, Maoist Politburo Member Janardan Sharma Pravakar, however, claimed that the peace process in the country will be ruined and the nation will be pushed towards conflict if UNMIN is bidden farewell.
He said that a clear-cut schedule for the peace process, along with integration of the combatants, should be formed with political consensus, and UNMIN’s term should be extended based on the same.
Pravakar added that despite the constant pressure from various political parties, UNMIN should not be segregated from the nation until the peace process concludes logically.
“The prime ministerial election is not a way out for consensus government,” said Pravakar. “Maoist is ready to withdraw candidacy and form any third party-led government.”
