Maoists submit commitment letter to SLMM, rejects 'One Madhes Province' demand
KATHMANDU, JUL 31 -
Keeping some reservations, the UCPN (Maoist) floated its commitment in writing to the 16-point concept paper earlier presented by the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM), on Saturday. The Maoists rejected 'One Madhes Province', saying that it is against the party policy.
The letter mentions, 'The party is ready for other provinces including autonomous province in the Tarai-Madhes with the right to individual decisions without hampering geographical sovereignty.'
The meeting held at the parliamentary party office of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) in Singha durbar concluded that Maoist 'Bahulbaad' can not be mentioned in the constitution; however, the party can agree multi party competition.
Likewise, the Maoist has also said that though the party is ready to integrate the combatants by preparing the calendar of events prior to the promulgation of new constitution, it not in favor of making public the number of its combatants at the present situation.
Emerging from the meeting, Maoist vice chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the next meeting will be held after the SLMM responses to the Maoists letter.
Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, vice chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattrai, Shrestha including senior leaders of SLMM were present at the meeting.
The Madhesi front with the strength of 83 seats in the 601-member Constituent Assembly (CA) could play a decisive role in breaking the deadlock over the prime ministerial race if it agrees to support the single largest party Maoists that has 238 seats.
