'Withdraw candidacy,' Khanal urges Maoists, NC
KATHMANDU, JUL 29 - CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said on Thursday that his party is ready to support any prime ministerial candidate in order to address the national agenda of peace and constitution.
However, he urged the prime ministerial candidates from the UCPN (Maoist) and the Nepali Congress (NC) to withdraw the candidacy and lay a new foundation of national consensus.
“If the debacle of majority government repeats, there will be a zilch gain, a misfortune, making ten months a waste”, said Khanal.
He was speaking at a programme on national consensus for peace and constitution organised by the party's youth wing National Youth Association in the capital today.
The UML boss, whose candidacy was withdrawn by the party after failing to secure a two-thirds majority, urged the NC to make sacrifice and the Maoists to implement the past agreements. Khanal maintained that the current electoral procedure should be quashed by amending the regulations so as to seek consensus.
Meanwhile, NC Vice-President Prakash Man Singh ruled out Khanal’s views on changing the regulations once the election is on.
Consensus among parties is possible only after intra-party consensus, Singh said charging the Maoists of harbouring pride of being a big party.
Also present, Maoist Vice-Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha said that the demand of the Madhesi front—single Madhesh province—could not be accepted.
MJF Chairman Upendra Yadav said the need of the hour is to guarantee the constitution and forge grounds to address the Madhesi front’s demands by settling down the residues of the peace process for national consensus.
Likewise CPN-ML General Secretary CP Mainali said the person who lacks sincerity towards democracy, peace and constitution cannot be accepted as the new prime minister. For this, the Maoists cannot be trusted, Mainali said.
