NAWALPARASI, JUL 29 - Minister for Land Reform and Management Dambar Shrestha remarked on Thursday that the support for the CPN-UML’s prime ministerial candidate purportedly extended by the Maoists was bogus.

Prior to the first prime ministerial election, the UCPN (Maoist) had decided to extend support to the UML candidate Jhalanath Khanal who pulled back at the last moment, as per the party decision, after it failed to secure a two-thirds majority in its favour.

“In fact, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal would have withdrawn his candidature if the Maoists had honestly supported UML candidate,” said Minister Shrestha, who arrived here in the district to distribute land certificates to the landless squatters. “The Maoists played trick on the UML by lending such a fake support,” he added.

He urged the both the prime ministerial candidates—Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel—to withdraw their candidacy.

Saying that a majority government cannot guarantee the peace and the statute drafting processes, the minister said there is no alternative for both the candidates to withdraw their candidacy. He advised to hand over the government leadership to small parties if the big parties cannot forge agreement.
