Journos manhandled during ex-King’s visit to Bhaktapur
BHAKTAPUR, JUL 26 - Ex-King Gyandendra Shah's visit to a religious site in Bhaktapur turned out to be ill-omened Monday, as the media persons gathered to cover the event were reportedly beaten up by security personnel and the locals.
The security personnel deployed for Shah’s security and the members of the Yagya Management Committee manhandled the journalists while the latter were trying to interview the former Hindu monarch.
The deposed monarch, who has intensified his visit to religious sites, was attending the closing of a Mahayagya—a Hindu religious ceremony—being organised at Chitapal VDC -7 in Bhaktapur.
President of Kavre chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Bhola Thapa and Kantipur Kavre correspondent Manoj Basnet sustained injuries following the incident.
Video cameras of Bhaktapur-based Kantipur correspondent Makar Shrestha and Sagarmatha Television were also smashed.
Shah arrived in Chitapol to offer prayers at the newly built Latarmeshwor Mahadev Temple this morning.
